St. Louis Public Schools (SLPS) are in the midst of a pivotal moment, one that demands clarity, accountability, and immediate action. As a community, we cannot afford to sit idly by while administrative instability threatens the education of our children. At the recent SLPS Board of Education meeting, the stakes were clear: calls for resignations, an ongoing state audit, and a community divided.
Administrative Instability is Hurting Our Kids
At the center of the turmoil is the decision to place Superintendent Dr. Keisha Scarlett on administrative leave. Board President Toni Cousins cited unspecified "concerns" but offered no concrete explanation. This lack of transparency has only fueled the fire of uncertainty, leaving parents, educators, and students in the dark about the future of their district.
This instability does not occur in a vacuum. When leadership falters, the ripple effects are felt most acutely by the students. Every moment spent addressing administrative crises is a moment stolen from a child's opportunity to learn and thrive.
The Importance of the State Audit
The state audit, launched earlier this year, is a step toward uncovering the truth about how SLPS manages its financial and operational resources. For some, this process represents a path to transparency and accountability. For others, it’s seen as a reaction to administrative dysfunction that should never have reached this point.
As a community, we must view the audit as an opportunity. If conducted thoroughly and without bias, it can reveal systemic weaknesses, paving the way for reforms that prioritize students over politics. But an audit alone is not enough—we need proactive leadership to act on its findings.
Calls for Resignations and Community Frustration
The frustration among parents and educators is palpable. Many have called for specific board members to step down, arguing that their actions—or inactions—have perpetuated a climate of mistrust and instability. These voices are not just criticisms; they are pleas for a system that puts students first.
The accusations of contributing to administrative instability must be addressed head-on. Resignations, while symbolic, will not solve the deeper issues at play. What’s needed is a recommitment from the board to transparent governance, open communication, and a steadfast focus on the success of our students.
A Path Forward: Trust and Action
As the founder of Coalition With STL Kids, I am calling on the SLPS Board of Education to take decisive steps:
Enhance Transparency: The community deserves to know why decisions like placing the superintendent on leave were made. A clear and honest explanation can begin to rebuild trust.
Act on Audit Findings: When the state audit is completed, its recommendations must not gather dust. Concrete actions should be taken to address inefficiencies and ensure resources are allocated where they matter most—to the students.
Prioritize Stability: The board must commit to creating a stable, supportive environment for students and educators alike. This includes hiring and retaining leadership that can navigate challenges with integrity and vision.
Engage the Community: Parents, educators, and stakeholders must have a seat at the table. Their insights and concerns are invaluable in shaping a district that works for everyone.
The Time to Act is Now
This is not just a moment of reckoning for the SLPS Board of Education; it’s a turning point for our city. Will we continue to allow instability and mistrust to define our schools, or will we rise to the occasion and demand better? The future of St. Louis depends on the choices we make today.
To the parents, educators, and community leaders reading this: your voices matter. Hold the board accountable. Participate in the process. Advocate for transparency and reform. Together, we can create an education system that empowers every child to succeed.
The challenges are immense, but so is our potential. Let’s not waste this opportunity to build a brighter future for St. Louis.
